Spelling and SEO

Posted by Brandon Zubek - 18/05/09 at 09:05 pm

Spelling is usually a good thing in the modern world. If you can’t spell, you are usually put to the side and chastised by your fellow classmates or colleagues at work. However, in the world of internet marketing, other peoples’ spelling mistakes can become your personal cash cow. Here’s how to do that: if you have a blog called ‘Calendars Today’, try putting ‘tags’ at the bottom of your blog that read ‘calendars, calenders’ – as ‘calenders’ is a common misspelling of ‘calendars’. This way, anybody who types ‘calenders’ in to Google is likely to find your site at some point, unless they use a spelling correction function, in which case your other search engine optimisation (SEO) skills will have to kick in if you want that vital traffic and conversion that comes from an efficient system. Anyway, next time you see somebody misspell a word, just consider how you can make money off their misfortune!

Nice idea. But, might not Google and other search engines consider that to be “keyword stuffing” and penalize you for it Page Rank – wise?

I’ve written a piece on SEO. There’s a link to it on the home page of my site.

I’d love to hear from you and get your thoughts on seo. Purposefully misspelling keywords – humm, interesting idea.
