Yahoo! and Google…in PPC bed together?
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008Pay Per Click consultants and agencies are holding their collective breath…
Yahoo! Is going to use Google for paid search…to see how it’s going to go. According to Marketwatch.com – Microsoft and it’s increasingly aggressive acquisition deal is freaking out at Yahoo! using Google paid search. The head of legal is saying that will bring 90% of all paid search to Google, a possible antitrust problem.
But the ads Yahoo is planning on using will only total 3% of all paid search, and they’re only doing it temporarily.
This is fantastic for those of us doing PPC, because Yahoo needs to find a better way to run the backend of their PPC campaigns.
The Yahoo backend is clunky and confusing, while Google’s MyClientCenter is sleek and easy to use. Yahoo could take many lessons from Google and I hope they do during this possible try-before-you-buy time. If Yahoo could incorporate some of the Google strategies of backend usage as well as not making it darn near impossible to work with Yahoo if you haven’t already spent $1,000 with them would make my life as a PPC consultant so much easier.
Yahoo has the right idea. If your system is broken, look at someone else’s (preferably someone that has paid search in the bag, like Google does) and use the knowledge to improve your own systems.
Or just merge with Google PPC so those of us running campaigns don’t have to spend three times as much time to run the same campaign we do over at Google. It’s just silly.
Learn To Search Google Effectively
Sunday, December 3rd, 2006Type in a keyword or even a short sentence, hit enter and go down the list. This is how many people use a search engine but as you will soon see, there is more to Google’s search engine. It has a lot more power that is not known, so people can’t take advantage of it.
Most users aren’t aware that Google automatically assumes the word “and” between all the words in a query. That is, if you enter two words, it assumes you’re looking for pages that include both those words—word one and word two. It doesn’t return pages that include only one or the other of the words
The upshot is that you don’t have to enter the word “and” in your query. If you’re searching for Bob and Ted, all you have to enter is bob ted. Google assumes the “and,” and automatically includes it in its internal index search.

Google’s New Mischievous Tool
Monday, October 9th, 2006There is a new tool from Google that makes it easy for computer hackers and attackers to search for passwords, software bugs and codes. The tool was supposed to help developers, but criminals will always find a way.
Google Buys Youtube
Monday, October 9th, 2006The rumors are true. Google has officially purchased Youtube, the popular online viral video website that allows users to post videos online for others to see. Many are happy about the deal and others are none to happy. Let’s just hope that Google doesn’t mess with the formula that has made Youtube great.
Google Updates Blogger (Finally)
Tuesday, August 15th, 2006Search engine giant google is finally updating Blogger and adding new features that many of it’s users have been waiting for. Along with the change is the ability to drag and drop layout changes, create catergories, and control who accesses your blog.
Google is allowing a few at a time to try out the new features and one day you might log on and see that you can upgrade to the new beta blogger if you want to. If you want to get it right away, you can sign up for a new blog and use the new features at Beta Blogger.
Google Expands…Into Real Estate
Wednesday, June 14th, 2006Google has announced that they will be purchasing over $300 million worth of property that is almost a million in square feet. They plan to expand Google Headquarters. Seems like a plan, if they ever go under at least they still have property they resell.
Google Won’t Make A Browser
Thursday, June 1st, 2006Google has said that they won’t make a browser just because they can when there are already great browsers out there. I would guess their not counting IE considering that they push Firefox brand.
I must say I am surprised since Google seems to do a lot of stuff “cause they can”. They also seem to do it better than those who tried before them, so it would have been interesting to see what they could have come up with in a new browser.
Jagger 2 Google Update Underway
Wednesday, October 26th, 2005Matt Cuts is reporting that the Jagger 2 google update is underway.
Read more about the update on the Webmaster World forums here.
Update(s):
Here are some reactions to this latest Jagger 2 update from the Webmaster World Forums (reg. req’d):
Pico_Train sez:
This update is stinking so far. 50% traffic gone.
This happened back in May. Completely kicked out from fantastic search positions. Clean, clean, clean.
Wrote to Google. First response, I said that wasn’t good enough and asked to take a look, 2nd response was a bit more interesting.
Ouch.
Jaffstar sez:
I monitor various sectors, and have completed extensive analysis on the following:
I am noticing that sites with a high percentages anchor text “keyword” in their back links, above a certain % are getting excluded in this update. Old sites that ranked well in the past are also gone. You will notice that these sites normally have natural one way links, and their keyword/domain was used in the text/anchor link, which caused the majority of their anchor text (keyword) to be similar.
On the other hand, sites that go on a wild hunt and get 1000’s of backlinks have a similar pattern with their backlinks. Yes, the majority of the anchor text is above a certain %.
All sites that are in the top 10 that I analyzed, are below a certain %.
So what you are seeing now is old authority sites moving down the serps and sites trying to manipulate their ranking also getting hit because they were above a certain % for their keywords. Sites (good or bad) are thrown into the evil pit.
This has been the pattern of Google SERP (search engine result pages) following updates for some time now. For example, Aaron Wall of SEO Book has been hit by this before for times like *surprise* “seo book.”
Yes, in his case, he absolutely deserves to rank in the top 10 for that term. But the updated Google algorithms can knock “over-optimized” or simply unlucky authoritative sites out of the rankings.
AdSense Channels Number Increased
Monday, August 22nd, 2005Google announced that the AdSense program now supports the use of 200 channels:
If you weren’t sure how you were going to track the performance of all of your new pages, your worries are over! We’ve increased the number of AdSense channels available to you, up to 200 active channels at any one time. Use your extra channels to compare the performance of your different ad units, of various page layouts, or to track the results of your optimization experiments.
For those who’re very new at using AdSense and haven’t perused this matter yet, channels are used to track your ads performances:
Channels provide you with a way to view detailed reporting about the performance of your pages. By assigning a channel to any combination of pages, you can track a variety of metrics across your sites. [...] You can even assign a channel to each of your separate domains, to see where your clicks are coming from.
With 200 active channels at any time, advertisers now indeed have more options available to perform their tracking.
